A legacy of innovation at the Deseret News

5+ mon, 2+ week ago (681+ words) In the early years of the Deseret territory, pioneer settlers in the Great Basin were largely isolated from news, both from the east and the west. News did come in waves, though, as new settlers brought letters and newspapers with them. Brigham Young often held "news conferences" when travelers or couriers arrived with eastern papers, reading aloud to crowds for hours. Then, on June 15, 1850 " 175 years ago " the first issue of the Deseret News was published, heralding a new era of mass media and technological innovation that still inspires us today. The inaugural issue of the Deseret News had a run of about 220 copies printed one sheet at a time on a Ramage press " highly regarded for its price, portability and ease of use. The shelf life for a newspaper then was weeks if not months. Published weekly " if paper stock…...

How the Deseret News has covered faith and religion for 175 years

5+ mon, 1+ week ago (677+ words) The first issue of the Deseret News, inked on the small Ramage printing press that oxen pulled across the American plains and mountains, was an anomaly. Somehow, that inaugural printing did not include any coverage of religion, faith or sermons when it appeared in June 1850. The following 175 years illustrate how the history of the Deseret News is inseparable from its treatment of religion and faith. The third issue included texts of Sunday sermons delivered by leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in a Salt Lake City bowery. Neither the Assembly Hall nor the Tabernacle outdoor nor any…...

Mullins was able to gather and publish information the FBI wasn't even able to get in the case of a murder and kidnapping at Dead Horse Point in July 1961. Deseret News editor Sarah Jane Weaver expressed gratitude for the mayor's proclamation. "We're so grateful that Mayor Mendenhall and Salt Lake City would recognize Deseret News' work and legacy," Weaver said. "After 175 years, we're still happy to call Salt Lake City Deseret News' home." The Deseret News serves "as a window for the nation to see all the good that is happening in Utah and a window out for Utahns…...
